Where to put a desk in a bedroom

Short answer

On the wall opposite the bed, with the window to your side and about 3 ft90 cm behind the chair. A 48 × 24 in desk fits that way from a 10x12 room up.A 120 × 60 cm desk fits that way from a 300 × 370 cm room up. Enter your room in the calculator under the 3D to see which wall works in yours.

Desk width and depth are on the tag. Left and right: as you stand facing the bed wall. The door opens into the room.

    Problem

The desk that fills the wall leaves no room for the chair

Your 11 ft 2 in × 12 ft 2 in bedroom with a full (double) bed.

People buy the desk that fills the gap on the wall.

    Visualise

The chair needs about 3 ft behind the desk

That's the green patch: room to pull the chair out and stand up. Under 2 ft 6 in you climb out sideways. The lines beside the bed are the path to get in.

Your 48 × 24 in desk fits: 3 ft 4 in behind the chair.

      Fix

Put it on the wall opposite the bed

Every wall, and the foot of the bed, carries a band: green where the desk fits, light red where it just fits, red where it fails a check, grey where it can't stand at all.

Wall opposite the bed, 1 ft 10 in from the right wall. Daylight from your left, bed behind you. Press Sit down for the view from the chair.

      The rule

Leave about 3 ft90 cm behind the chair and 2 ft60 cm beside the bed, keep the door swing clear, and turn the desk so the window is to your side.

      1. Measure the room wall to wall, and mark how far the door swings in.
      2. Measure from the desk's front edge to the bed or wall behind it: 3 ft90 cm is comfortable, 2 ft 6 in75 cm the least.
      3. Check there's still a 2 ft60 cm path along the bed with the chair pushed in.
      4. Sit where the chair goes: the window should be on your left or right, not behind the screen.

      FAQ

Where should a desk go in a small bedroom?

On the longest free wall, usually opposite or beside the bed, where 30–36 in75–90 cm is left behind the chair. If no wall has that, a narrower desk (40 × 20 in100 × 50 cm) or moving the bed into a corner usually opens one up.

Can a desk go at the end of the bed?

It usually fits, but you face the bed while you work, and you need 30–36 in75–90 cm behind the chair. After an 80 ina 200 cm bed most rooms don't have it.

Should a desk go under a window?

Not for screen work: the window behind the monitor causes glare. Turn the desk so the window is to your side.

      What if nothing works?

Try the bed in a corner, or a narrower desk. The calculator offers the bed move when it opens up a better wall.
